Geophysical Museum Skalná

About location

The town of Skalná in the Karlovy Vary region is located in an area of high frequency earthquakes known as earthquake swarms. The Institute of Geophysics of the Czech Academy of Sciences has been researching this natural phenomenon since 1962, and 25 seismic stations have been positioned in the area, forming the WEBNET network.

The Institute of Geophysics has set up a geophysical exhibition in Skalná, which explains the latest findings on earthquakes in western Bohemia, the methods of measuring earthquakes and the theory of plate tectonics. The Geophysical Museum including the Education Center is housed in a historic 16th-century farmhouse. The museum has a small lecture hall with a capacity of approximately 15 people, where visitors can watch a documentary film about earthquake swarms in the area. Part of the tour is a visit to the medieval adit under the castle Vildštejn, where the seismic station is located.
